Grown up

When I get older losing my hair

Many years from now

Will you still be sending me a valentine

Birthday greetings, bottle of wine

If I’d been out till quarter three

 Would you lock the door?

Will you still need me, will you still feed me

When I’m sixty – four?

The Beatles “When I’m Sixty – Four “

One day  out of the blue my wife says, that I never grew up. When I ask for an explanation, it is you never did. For the life of me I can see that I don’t look sixty – four. When I ask other people how old I appear to be, the answer is usually ten years younger then my age. I don’t feel as old as I am am. Sure there are the aches and pains from the labor intensive work I have done throughout my life. Other then that it is easier to relate with people younger then I than with other people my age.

When younger adults and teens call me sir, there is an appreciation for they being respectful. Actually inside there is still my youth waiting to grow up.

And if you should survive to 105

Look at all you’ll derive out of being alive!

And here is the best part, you have a head start

If you are young at heart.

Frank Sinatra, “Young At Heart”

A thought has been weighing heavy on my mind since Easter.

As I drive around town either at work or not I view other people standing in line to check out purchases, waiting to cross the street or in any kind of situations. I try to figure these people out . They appear anxious to move as if they’re late getting to their destination. Downtown I drive past the homeless shelter and wonder how did they get there. There was a mother with two children sitting in church Sunday and I am thinking where is the father \ husband. Today I see two men eating along side the highway and there again is me thinking why there.

Most mornings I ask God to let others see Him in me. Am I kind enough to where they see Him? Do I listen intently in conversations with others and remember to respond with kind words?

Is this the Spirit Jesus told the disciples his father would give them?

In John 4:11 – 13, “Dear friends, since God so loved us, we ought to love one another, God lives in us and his love made us complete. This is how we know that we live in him and he is us: He has given us of his spirit “.

The Spirit is teaching me to see others for more than their outward appearance. He is showing me to look for more, to hear more . Only then will I be able to show that he is in me.

How do you Pray when You Cannot Focus?

I have found it difficult to pray for longer then five minutes. Yet most of my day is focused on my Lord.

Over the weekend, one of my very dear girlfriends contacted me. Our friendship is a God Thing to the inth degree. A years ago, we became Facebook friends somehow, and then NAMASTE! – my spirit recognized her spirit the instant we talked. We have much in common health-wise, many of the same struggles. It was as if Abba said, “Hmmm….these two could really bounce things off each other.” And he was right.

She is going through a prolonged episode of ‘brain fog’ due to chronic health issues. If you are healthy (or your brain is young) the fog might be a foreign concept to you. It’s more than forgetting what you went in to the kitchen for. It’s like your thoughts are trying to gain footing on a…

Why Isn’t There A Hashtag #Christians?

When it happens here in the US then those who have no care in the world will know persecution.

Joel D. Hirst's Blog

Laughing from down below – my little boy entertaining the crowd as only a three year old can. It’s Easter, we like so many are in family today; as it should be – a good thing. Food, drink, pie – so much pie. Joy.

We are lucky. So many suffer, we forget that for many people celebrating Easter is dangerous – a clandestine activity full of risk and subterfuge. Secret meeting places, multiple knocks on a wooden door – a code that conveys membership in a secret society of believers. Dark halls under imposing buildings. Secret clearings in forbidden woods; hushed voices reading the story.

It shouldn’t be like that – but it is definitely a condition that Christians are accustomed to. Since the days of the believers hiding in underground vaults in Rome to escape Nero’s insanity; to Chinese communist prison camps for those who dared to remember the…

Faith renewed

I had agreed to take my father in law to an appointment today. He was under the assumption from the instructions given to him when the appointment was made that a procedure would be performed to alleviate his discomfort. Without going into the details I will just say he has discomfort in his groin area.

We were taken to an examination room where the aide took his blood pressure, asked why he was there,  the regular questions asked from medical staff.  The urologist comes in , introduces himself, I explain who I am and the doctor asks my father about his discomfort. He proceeds to tell the urologist his history with this problem. There comes a point when the urologist asks what the date was when a procedure was done. My father in law says, it should be in his medical file history. The urologist says that since records were computerized that record is not searchable. Strike one against medical records being data now instead of a hard copy stored some place. I personally have lost faith in the medical profession over the years because of the slip ups with my wife’s treatment.

The discussion has entered into what the urologist can and cannot due to relieve my father in law’s discomfort . The urologist explains that since my father in law is on blood thinners and would have to stop taking it for so many days that alone would put him at risk for a heart attack before or after the procedure. Then he says that because of this and other heart related issues he will  not operate. The risk is to high and he won’t take the risk.

So my father in law says he can find a doctor who will do the procedure and the urologist agrees that he may find someone who will take the risk. Then he turns to me for my thoughts. I agree that if the risk is there don’t do it. The way to relieve this discomfort was to start wearing boxer briefs and take over the counter pain relievers.

Today my faith in the medical profession was renewed by a doctor who wouldn’t take the risk over profit.

Some discussion on where to go on Easter Sunday came up the other day. In my world we all gather as a many of us who live near each other, at least within twenty miles of each other at family members home. Now for married couples the decision could be daunting . Do we go to her or his family’s gathering?

Now that I am old enough and have one living parent this isn’t a big decision. My mother lives in assisted living and cannot travel do to her condition. So on Easter Sunday I visit with her following church service that morning till she grows tired and needs to rest. Or I see her on the Saturday before Easter Sunday.

This takes me back to the discussion presented to me yesterday. My in-laws who have invited all of my wife’s family to their home every year. This year for them to travel even to a daughters home is out of the question. My mother in law is to weak to walk long distances. Her husband tires easy from take care of her every need plus he is in his eighties.

One of the nieces has invited everyone into her home this coming Easter Sunday. For all of the years my in laws had all of the families at their home now seems to not sit right with me and my wife.

One of the Ten Commandments says to honor your Father and your Mother. So my wife and I will prepare a meal for my in laws and us and spend Easter Sunday with them. Isn’t that honoring a father and a mother. For goodness sakes, just because our parents become unable to travel you don’t exclude them. You make every effort possible to include them. What really perturbed me was that the invite came from a family member who claims to be Christian. It must be the Irish wisdom past down through my upbringing that you welcome and provide nourishment when fitting. This year it is fitting.

There is a Lenten program that sends me videos and a discussion section. It is from . It has kept focused this Lent. Today’s segment is Complete Joy. Jesus wants his joy in us. In my cubicle at work is a statement I found somewhere, it is just there to remind me everyday, In bold letter it states, “Lord empty me of me so I can be filled with you.” There is another one tacked next to it that states, “Let me use my tongue to build up, not tear down, not for evil.”  I realized that to have Jesus’s joy in me my life has to be like his was in the gospel. The prayer at the end of today’s segment says, “Jesus, let me get out of the way so you can fill me with complete joy.

While doing my job today the song, “Redeemed ” by Big Daddy Weave was on the radio. It had been quite awhile since I had heard it aired. The first time I heard it I was sobbing like a baby. Tears of joy from myself being redeemed when I opened myself up to Jesus and his love and forgiveness. Today those tears returned like the first time but, those tears were of joy that I had found by accepting that many times I will stumble and he is there to lift me back up.

May you find complete joy this coming Easter.

Give us Joy

Life around here was getting gloomy yesterday. A incident that had occurred the night before had set the mood for the following day. To lift myself out of the doldrums I turned to my new testament bible. One verse in it spoke of the joy of life in Christ. Why was I not feeling joyful then ? Searching for the source of joy  I began to think about some Christian comedians I have seen on YouTube. Is laughter the best medicine?

A man was taking it easy lying on the grass and looking up at the clouds. He was identifying shapes when he decided to talk to God. “God”, he said, “how long is a million years?”

God answered, “In my frame of reference, it’s about a minute.’

The man asked, “God how much is a million dollars?”

God answered, “To Me it’s a penny.”

The man then asked, “God can I have a penny?”

God said, “In a minute.”

He who laughs last thinks slowest.

I didn’t use to finish sentences, but now I

A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

They told me I was gullible and I believe them.

Ask me about my vow of silence

A little girl went up to her mother holding her stomach saying, ” Mommy my stomach hurts.” Her mother replied, “That’s because it is empty , you have to put something into it.”

Later that day when the preacher and his wife were over for dinner. The preacher began to feel bad. Holding his head he said, ” I have such a terrible headache.”

The little girl looked up giving him the sweetest smile that any child could give. Then she said, That’s because it’s empty, you have to put something into it.”

I feel refreshed and full of joy. Laughter is the best medicine.

St. Patrick’s Day

Seventeen days ago I posted that on St. Patrick’s Day  that we in the Irish- American community do not appreciate or condone the portraying of the Irish people as drunks.

If you will be observing this day with us please refrain from caricaturing the Irish as drunken fools.

We Irish – Catholics normally observe the day by attend mass in the morning. I thank God today for sending St. Patrick back to Ireland and proclaiming the Christian faith to the people of Ireland.

Have a blessed and safe day.    Slainte

This Life

Some fear death to the point of being scared of it every waking moment.  Sorry but, I don’t accept that belief. Earlier today I tried to express my belief in life after death. I could have quoted scripture like;

John 3:16  For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall have eternal life.

John 12:25  Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

Revelations 20:4   I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received the mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

Not until others have seen the joy in me. To them who do not believe this is just words. I truly believe that more people accept the word of God and seek eternal life by the actions of Christians. Since becoming stronger in my faith, I do it His way because I failed trying to do it my way. My way only brought sadness, despair and regret.

C.S. Lewis said, If we only have the will to walk, God is pleased with our stumbles.

Augustine wrote,  God loves each of us as if there were only one of us.

For all the unbelievers I say find a remarkable Christian and see how they love, how they stumble and get up again because we are not home yet. This is my faith, in the living God.
